Monday 2nd July

Good Morning

We have Flat Turf Meetings today at Hamilton; Pontefract and Windsor and AW at Worcester. There are only 5 Handicap races on Turf with more than 8 runners, 2 of which have 9 runners and 3 of which have 8 runners. We did look at AW especially the 3.45 and 2 Amateur Races with decent fields but as the song goes "there were more questions than answers"; so best left alone.

Clearly the whole of the UK needs some of the rain the South West and parts of the West got yesterday but very little in sight for many.

A decent start to THE SHOWCASE Race yesterday with runner up and third at decent each way odds, the winner proved himself very worthy though for a yard as "on fire" as the sun. Sadly, due to falls and collapses we lost a number of horses at Uttoxeter yesterday; including the Mention Another Hero; who was going well enough to join Hellann Harri and Relentless Dreamer in the places when suddenly pulling up.

I have no doubt Courses do everything they can to water ground and provide state of the art cooling facilities, but it is a subject I have raised over and over again and will continue to do so. It is "at which point does the craving for a bet CROSS the line in terms of horse welfare"?? That is a very dangerous place to be, and frankly, I don't want to see any more wonderful brave warriors sacrificed in the name of sport, or god forbid a bet. Maybe time to look especially; at the suitability of long distance races in such extreme heat and conditions, boring I know but common sense; is sometimes the best way.

Just the one MENTION bet today at Pontefract in the 3.00
