Newcastle 3.08 - Handicap Chase - Class 5 - 2 miles 4 furlongs - Soft - 12 run
With the meeting on and frost as big an issue as waterlogging it has to be taken on trust exactly what the ground will be. It may be genuinely soft or it may be that crusty frost affected glue that some horses hate and others seem to plough through.
For that reason I'll reduce staking to "shrapnel bets" but both of the named horses are in the Tracker and both have compelling form and other evidence to support a sensible investment.
NEWBERRY NEW ran well for a fair way over 3 miles at Uttoxeter recently and immediately got flagged up to track especially over a shorter trip. Its won on this course and elsewhere at the Distance its back below its last winning Handicap mark and the booking of Brian Hughes to ride the horse for the first time suggests maybe they feel the horse is ready to snap back into some form that was winning races as recently as March 2021.
KNOCKNAMONA too is back on a winning mark, it too has winning for at Newcastle and elsewhere at this trip, runs its 3rd race of the season and won third time up last season off this same mark.
So plenty of evidence that both can be far more competitive here than recent form may suggest.
