Saturday 2nd November

A poor day yesterday when Tommie Gun particularly was most disappointing, and nothing really delivered on expectations.

The weather has decided to hit a sustained dry spell it seems; just as the NH season really kicks up a gear, so we will tread cautiously at Ascot today. I think in these early skirmishes it's best we keep the number of selections per race to minimal levels and look for well analysed bigger priced pokes and as the ground turns more Autumunal and field sizes pick up, to turn up the wick accordingly.

There is nothing of real interest on the Flat at Newmarket, sadly small fields at Wetherby at a meeting that has sadly lost its lustre in recent years and on this occasion nothing of note in Ireland.

So we'll have a small poke at the two big Ascot handicaps and also a couple of confident selections up at Ayr from our Northern Expert.

We'll have another look tomorrow with a decent Jumps card at Cork on the radar. There will also be a brief appreciation from Ian following the very sad passing of one of the greatest scribes and luminaries of our sport Alastair Down.
