Hereford 1.45
1.45 Handicap Hurdle - Class 4 - 3 miles 1 and 1/2 furlongs - 14 run - Good to Soft (dry day after early rain)
I'm going against the market here based on confidence that a few are very well priced and decent marks on past form.
At the head of the market Henderson runs Scarpia (also runs Go Clique who could run a place) its won at 2 miles and placed at 2 miles and 5 furlongs, highly placed, perfectly understand why the market picks it but yet to conclusively prove stamina and heart in a battle that some have shown before. Art Of Diplomacy is second favourite and paid an instant return on stable debut at Ludlow after move from the Easterbys, it beat a decent yardstick that day in Our Idic Boy it's up 8 lbs though and I think in a much deeper race here. Theme Tune is top weight for Jonjo and ran OK on seasonal debut but has yet to prove any form beyond 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
Beau Haze is a Course winner upped in trip and one to watch, Mr Clarkson comes off a 243 day break for David Pipe, it has a win mark of 128, runs off 119 with a 7lbs claim and is very interesting on that basis but evidence suggests it may just need this blow out and one I would be tracking for next 2 runs after today. Mr Washington is also a danger having won off 110 at Chepstow over the trip but just lumbered a bit by the penalty for that win. Steinkraus we tipped to win a Class 5 last time, it's up 7lbs and in Grade and in deeper and I'd be surprised if he won under these race conditions.
The pair I think are excellent if somewhat speculative value are SUBCONTINENT for Venetia Williams with the in form Charlie Deutsch in the saddle. The price may go so get on asap if you can. Its won a 3 mile Chase off 115, and a 2 and a half mile Hurdle off the same mark, it "pops up" with a bold run from time to time, is conveniently running off that magic mark of 115 and has Pulled Up twice, both in better grade races and fallen in 3 runs since. It's one to have some investment in today but also to follow very closely as it's come in the win mark territory.
I also think Skeltons GLOBAL HARMONY who is a Course and Distance winner is over-priced. Its back over Hurdles where its won off marks of 113 and 116 (over Course and Distance) and runs off 116 here and at double figure odds another speculative bet where I think it's important to keep your nerve and do what's worked in the past and will work again and again.
